The Jesus Christ worshiped among many Evangelicals is not the Jesus of the Bible, he is a Jesus of their own making. This Jesus is your friend, your buddy! He is there when you want to hang out in church on Sunday. He does not ask much of you; just that you believe in him and ask him into your heart. He knows you are a sinner and he is there ready with grace to take away your sins. He says, "Come as you are!" and he doesn't care if you stay that way.
Another Jesus is harsh and condemning. He demands perfection from those who would call on his name. He punishes those who fail, heaping guilt and shame upon them. He brings fear and terror upon his subjects and obedience is done out of fear. He is keeping a list of all your wrongs and will broadcast them on the last Day for all the ages to see.
Then we have Jesus as the Cosmic Santa Claus. He is kindly fellow, not very serious about righteousness and holiness and takes all of our sins in stride as human blunders. He simply throws up his hands and laughs at our pathetic efforts while he hopes we will do better next time. He is followed closely by the Jesus of the Magic Lamp.
Jesus of the Magic Lamp is presented as the one who will make all your wants and desires come true if you only rub the lamp the right way and say the magic words. Your desires for health and wealth can be attained if you just believe in him and in yourself. You have got to be positive and understand that you can have the best life has to offer, because Jesus wants you to!
None of these accurately reflect the Jesus of the Bible. The Jesus Christ of the Bible is found within its pages. Revelation 1:12-17 gives us an accurate picture of who Jesus is
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. Revelation 1:12 through Revelation 1:18 (NASB)
This Jesus stands among and ministers to the Church- your church- today. He is your High Priest, and your God (Heb. 4:14, 15). He knows every nook and cranny of your heart, every thought and intention, every motive you have (Heb 4:12). He hears every word you speak before you ever say it out loud. He hears the things you think and He knows who you are when no one is looking (Ps 139). Is He full of grace and mercy? Yes! Is He full of righteousness and holiness? Yes.
Jesus is deadly serious about His Church and it's purity. WE are the Church.
I believe we, Church must stop playing around with church. We, Church have to stop making Jesus into someone of our own making! Jesus IS GOD and as such He demands that we worship Him in righteousness and truth for who He is.
It is a privilege to come into the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It is a privilege to be called Children of God, and it is a privilege to be counted among the Elect. If you are going to accept the privilege than you must also accept the responsibility of properly representing Jesus Christ in your daily life.
