Working

How we perceive something influences how we do and experience that thing. As believers, we are called to renew our thinking about all areas of our lives so that we are living in a Christ-glorifying way.

How should we think about work? I think about the many times I moan and grumble about having to work.  I know that I am not alone in this! How many of us do this, whatever that work may be? Be it going out to work, doing housework, or studying. I have noticed in my own thinking, and that of many others, that work is often seen as a necessary evil which has to be tolerated so that we can truly experience life at other times.

Often work is viewed as something that makes us miss out on real life. But in Genesis 1:26-31 we read that we were made to work at creation. God has made us to work.

So what makes work so hard? We read the answer in Genesis 3. After the fall into sin, pain enters family and work life. We see in the New Testament how we should view work as believers. Thankfully even this important area of our lives is redeemed by Christ.

We are all called to work (1 Thes. 4:11, 12; 2 Thes. 3:10-12, Titus 2:5). Our important heart motivation is that we do our work (whatever that may be) as unto the Lord (Ephesians 6:5-7, Colossians 3:22,23).

May we do all our work the way that Paul teaches.  May we work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. As we do our work for the Lord, we honor and glorify him.
