Lies We Tell Ourselves- and Believe

Many of the problems we face are due in part to the lies we tell ourselves.

Someone makes a negative comment to us or about us and we receive it as though it is true.

Over time these lies are reinforced by our own thinking and eventually they become a part of our belief system. This can lead to depression, anxiety, worthlessness and other responses that lead to life dominating sinful actions and attitudes.

It is very, very difficult to convince someone to believe differently about themselves once negative messages have been ingrained in their heart. There must be a strong unchangeable foundation underneath a persons belief system for it to hold up under the negative messages of the world.

Is it right to let the opinion of a teacher or a boss define your identity?
Is it right to be persuaded about your worthiness by popular opinion or culture?
Is it right to accept the messages of ungodly people into your heart?

I see the devastation that is created in the lives of people who accept as gospel truth the words of people about who they are.

Our identity is determined by our Creator.

a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God 1 Peter 2:9
holy and blameless Ephesians 1:4
God's workmanship Ephesians 2:10
God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved Colossians 3:12

He is the one who has made us in His image.

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. John 1:12-13
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 4:6-7

He has given us our gifts and talents. He has given us our abilities and our capabilities.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12

The problem I see is the voices of the world drown out the soft, quiet whisper of God.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16

It is easier (although painful) to listen to someone tell you who you are than it is for you to search it out in Scripture. It does not make sense, but sometimes people prefer to believe the bad things are true about themselves.

The unholy Gospel of Psychology is all around and seems to make so much sense until it is held up to the Gospel of Truth. Sadly, sometimes a person chooses to believe the unholy over the holy despite the pain it brings them. The Gospel has to be foundation in the heart and soul of a Christian.  The gospel has to be the basis for a persons belief about who they are.  Any other message is false.
