Th earth is the Lord's and all it contains, the world and those who dwell in it. Psalm 24:1 (ESV)
The way the Lord is choosing to spend His money - the money He allows us to make- has been interesting to observe over the past month. From our simultaneous illnesses at the beginning of October to our son's recent medical emergency, to car parts, a dog near death that needed a doggie ER...on a Saturday, the need for a new refrigerator, and now a cracked tooth we have won the lottery of financial mishaps that far outstretch our meager emergency fund.
Once again the Lord reminds me He owns it all. We have been given the ability and skill to earn money but none of it "belongs" to us, we are merely stewards of what is His.
I am thankful we have a budget, I am thankful we know how to live on less. I am thankful we are all healthy and that our basic needs are met. I am thankful for this trial because it reminds me of all I have that is unrelated to money.
I am regenerated and redeemed, adopted by the God of the universe. I am forgiven, I have untold spiritual riches, I am indwelt by the Holy Spirit, I am justified, abiding, amazingly content in my circumstances, and rejoicing in hope. There is much to be thankful for that can never be taken away or destroyed.
I am thankful for my loving and wonderful husband, my family and friends. I have so much to be grateful for!
Perhaps you are also in the midst of a visit from the infamous (and fictitious) Murphy. Maybe things are really tough in your home or your marriage or at work. Did you wake up today discouraged and wondering how you can face the challenges of this life?
Can I encourage you to take a few minutes and practice gratitude? It will re-orient your thinking as you decide to obey the command of Colossians 3:15: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Hold loosely. Nothing here really matters. It's only "stuff" and you won't be taking it with you.
Love God, love people. Forget stuff.
