Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Prov. 18:21
Many of us are very familiar with lessons on the power of the tongue. We know our words can bring encouragement and praise, yet we also know that when we give free reign to our tongue we can terrify and destroy those we love.
Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. Prov. 21:23
So many times I have said things I wished I could reel back in! Words hastily spoken, thoughts I should have kept to myself, and foolish talk have all brought their share of trouble. When you speak in such a way that you cause trouble, your first priority is to repent and confess before God. Then go and make it right with those you hurt or offended. Admit your sin, admit you were wrong, ask their forgiveness, and thank them for their grace toward you.
The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. Prov. 10:8
Are you a babbler? Do you say twenty words when five will do? Do you talk for no reason other than to fill the silence? Is your chatter is prone to promote discord rather than unity? If this describes you, may I encourage you to learn to curb your tongue? Learn to listen rather than speak. Allow silence, think before you embark on another verbal rant, ask yourself if you should speak...
If you have been confronted on this topic before, you know how difficult it is to receive a rebuke from a friend or someone who cares enough to let you know your mouth is out of control. However, you must realize she is doing you a great service by instructing you in righteousness. Sometimes there is nothing more loving than being told to shut your mouth. Frankly, sometimes there is nothing more necessary either.
Use your mouth to give life. Offer words of encouragement and wise counsel when they are needed to those who need to hear them. Sing songs and praise to our God, recite Psalms and other Scripture that you may give grace to those who listen.
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
