A number of years ago I saw a book by the title, Power for Living advertised on television and billboards all around town. It was endorsed by Christian athletes and some celebrities. There have been other books and movements along the same lines since Power for Living, most of them are okay. They are books about faith in God, but they are not on par with the Bible.
The Christian's power for living comes from our unity with Christ. This relationship is fueled by the Holy Spirit acting on the Word of God and affecting the heart of man.
The Bible is the only unchangeable source of wisdom that is intended to correct our thoughts, actions, and attitudes. It is the only book that covers every topic known to man in one form or another. The Bible is a book written by God that will lead us to God. Thinking about (mediating on) the truths of the Bible will bring us into closer communion with God on an experiential level. We will experience power for living! His Word will lift us out of despair, doubt, defeat, and discouragement.
When our thoughts, actions, and motivations are flowing out from the impact His Word has upon our hearts, we will experience victory in overcoming our problems and sins. We will be freed from the crippling habits that enslave us in our thought-life and be able to move calmly and steadily forward with courage and confidence.
We are in a spiritual war every day. We are surrounded by the enemy everywhere we go, but we are also surrounded by great defenders who overshadow us with their wings (Psalm 91:4), under gird us with everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27), and encamp all around us (Psalm 34:7). This God-ward gaze enables us to experience peace in the midst of violent storms in life (Philippians 4:7) as we trust in Him (Isaiah 26:3).
In times of fear and turmoil, choose to fix your mind on what you know is true. Choose to love God with all your mind. It is your mind/thoughts that have the astonishing ability to control the course of your life.
For as he thinks within himself, so he is. Proverbs 23:7 (NASB)
This is one reason we need to take every thought captive for the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)! Women seem to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about what might happen and about what could be going on. As a result, we spend too much precious time captive to fear and worry.
God is in control. He is loving, capable, powerful, and He has determined our final destiny. By His grace, He will enable us to powerfully deal with what He allows and brings into our lives. In Christ alone, we have power for living.
